What is Tribal Belly Dance?
I am certain that to those of you who have never tried your hand at belly dancing before, your mind's eye has drawn a picture of women in brightly coloured costumes, donned in sequins and coin belts and dancing to Arabic or similar sounding music. Stereotypical, I know, however Egyptian belly dancing is the most mainstream form of the dance available.
Tribal belly dance, on the other hand, comes in all shapes and forms but all variations of it are, in my opinion, more grounded and intense than what some call 'cabaret' belly dance. This does not mean to say that either style is better than the other, of course! Here is a brief run through of some of the variations of tribal belly dance, starting from ATS:
American Tribal Style (ATS)
Carolena Nericcio was the first to coin the term 'American Tribal Style'. ATS is the original style of group improvisational belly dance and the foundation of all other forms of Tribal known today. The ATS style encompasses all manner of specifics, such as dance vocabulary, movements, accents, cues and even costuming.
Tribal Group Improv
This term applies to all styles of group improvisational tribal belly dance which are not strictly ATS. This form of belly dance (as well as ATS) is a performance delivered mainly as a collective. The usual format is to have a 'chorus line' at the back from which a group of dancers will come forward and follow a series of cues given by the leader. Tribal Group Improv is what I will be gearing students up for in the beginners' classes at Tribal Dance Malta.
Tribal Fusion
There are many definitions of what constitutes Tribal Fusion. However, as a general idea of what this style incorporates, it is usually a mix of both choreographed routines and improvisational techniques.
Tribal Fusion is the combination of Tribal belly dancing and costuming together with influences of other belly dance and related dance styles which do not generally appear in the common Tribal belly dance movement vocabulary.
